Learning for Life

PHSE and RSE

At MBA we plan our teaching and learning within ‘Learning for Life’ (PSHE/RSE) to best meet the needs of the young people in our care. We adapt existing, freely available resources and are continuing to create our own to achieve the objectives defined within the PSHE Association Framework for SEND Planning Framework for Pupils with SEND (pshe-association.org.uk). Details of these resources can be requested by contacting our SLT.

Wherever possible we try to use real life, experiential materials to ensure that our learners have ‘hands on’ experiences. Examples of this include realistic ‘babies’ with baby care equipment, a drugs box with faux materials designed to educate through sight D&WpDrugs Box Version 4.1 (dandwp.com)and bingo games to encourage discussion and thought around personal hygiene.

We use visual prompts where appropriate as well as objects of reference for all of our learners. Our curriculum is also very dynamic to respond to news events or incidents that have arisen within school in a sensitive and informative way to ensure that our learners make the best possible choices in line with the most current affairs and events. We ensure that teaching is adapted to both age and stage of the learners meaning that our learners may not be taught about certain topics at the same time as mainstream students of the same age. This is left to the discretion and expertise of each teacher with the government supported PSHE Association guidelines.

For further details about what subjects and areas of focus your child is currently studying please refer to the appropriate topic web and/or breadth of study documents available on this website. If we are learning about Sex and relationships specifically then your child’s teacher will be in contact by email prior to this to explain which particular aspects they will be looking at. Please see the Meridian Trust Policy document for Primary and Secondary RSE which can be found on the website for more information. Please do not hesitate to contact the school with any questions around this important area of your child’s education.

We teach Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education to help children learn about:

  • Healthy relationships and friendships
  • Emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Staying safe, including online
  • Physical health and healthy lifestyles
  • Rights, responsibilities, and respect for others

Parental Right to Withdraw

Parental Right of Withdrawal

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education, including collective worship where it is of a religious nature.

To exercise this right, please contact the Headteacher in writing. The school will make alternative arrangements to ensure your child is safely supervised and engaged. Withdrawal will not disadvantage your child academically or socially.
